Another weekend split for Cards, extras included

With the upcoming 2010 Player Draft nearly here, the St. Louis will need to a decision on who will be the team’s first selection. Until, St. Louis will continue to see the fruit of those previously plucked, yet didn’t receive a decision.
Over the weekend, St. Louis started two rookie pitchers, Adam Ottavino and Jaime Garcia. Both were drafted by the Cardinals in recent years, the first in 1st round, while the other in the 22nd. But despite solid outing from both pitchers, neither was given a win.
Ottavino started on Saturday, with Garcia on Sunday. The entire weekend was played between the Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers. The two teams seemed fairly well matched, causing both games to go into extra innings. The Cardinals pulled out a win in the first game, but were less successful in the second, splitting yet another weekend series.
Total, 21 innings were played between the two contests. Of those innings, 11 were pitched by either Garcia or Ottavino. They fared well, surrendering only 4 earned runs combined, but as fate would have it, a decision was not in the picture.
Instead, Mitchell Boggs earned the win on Saturday after pitching a scoreless top of the 11th. The Cardinals followed up in the bottom of that inning with a rally started by Aaron Miles and ended when Colby Rasmus hit the game-winning single to give the Cardinals a final 5-4 lead.
Rasmus, another recent Cardinal draft product, had a very good weekend all around. Besides his walkoff hit, he went 4 for 6 with a run scored and 4 RBIs. In addition, he also blasted two homeruns, his 9th and 10th of the season, respectively.
One of Rasmus’ homer came on Sunday while Garcia was pitching. The solo shot in the 3rd was one of only two runs St. Louis scored while Garcia was in the game. The other came in the 6th when Albert Pujols smashed his 14th round-tripper of the year. The Cardinals tied the game in the 8th, but lost in the 10th by a score of 3-4.
But the Cardinals’ showcase of fine young pitching will likely continue on Monday when either rookie P.J. Walters or 27-year old Blake Hawksworth will the start. The game will mark the beginning of a new series with Los Angeles Dodgers, and will start at 9:10 CT.
