Cardinals out-pitched by Blanton, Phillies

To allow only 2 runs on 4 hits in an entire game and lose sounds bad.

But then again, to allow only 2 runs on 4 hits in an entire game against the Phillies sounds pretty good.

Both happened to the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night when the Phillies and their newly acquired starter Joe Blanton held the Cardinals to 1 run, helping Philadelphia to a 2-1 win.

All three runs scored in the, Cardinals’ and Phillies’, were scored on solo homeruns. Greg Dobbs hit the first one of the game in the 3rd inning. In the next inning, Ryan Howard hit his 31st homerun of the season with his own solo blast.

It stayed 2-0 until the 7th inning when the Cardinals’ leading homerun hitter Ryan Ludwick hit his 26th homerun of the season, teh Cardinals onnly run of the game.

Total, there were only 9 hits in the game, 5 of which were tallied up by the Cardinals. No one Cardinals had more than a single hit. Skip Schumaker, Yadier Molina, Adam Kennedy, Aaron Miles and of course Ludwick were the 5 different Cardinals with a hit apiece. Aaron Miles was the only Cardinal to reach base twice, as he also walked.

Braden Looper was the Cardinals starter on the mound, pitched 7 strong innings only only 3 hits. He also allowed 2 homerun while walking 2 and striking out 4.

Russ Springer and Ryan Franklin each pitched an inning of scoreless baseball. Springer walked a batter while Franklin walked a batter intentionally and allowed a hit.

With the loss, the Cardinals are still in 3rd place in the Central Division behind the Milwaukee Brewers and the 1st place Chicago Cubs.

Today, the Cardinals will try to take the series from the Phillies in the series finale. Todd Wellemeyer (8-4, 4.13 ERA) will start for the Cardinals against Brett Myers (4-9, 5.46 ERA) fort the Phillies. The first pitch is set for 7:05 CT.
